Pope Leo XIV, aged 71, was released from Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, four days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous mass from his right lung. The doctors confirmed he has adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. Pope Leo made the initial announcement during his Sunday noon blessing last week when he informed the public about the planned surgery for a nodule detected early and deemed circumscribed or well-localized. He will return to the Vatican and is expected to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer from St Peter's Square on Sunday afternoon, marking an unusually transparent approach by the Vatican regarding the Pope’s health. The surgical team, including Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora, stated that blood tests and a chest X-ray showed steady improvement post-surgery, leading to his fit-for-discharge status. Despite undergoing the 90-minute surgery on Tuesday, Pope Leo resumed some work activities by Thursday, indicating a quick recovery phase. The Vatican also noted that the pope called Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, urging dialogue and peace amid intensifying bombardments in Ukraine. His discharge reflects positive post-operative outcomes, allowing him to resume his papal duties more swiftly than expected.
