IHG Hotels & Resorts is investing heavily in luxury hotels across Australia ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. In Brisbane, the former Hilton hotel, a landmark designed by Harry Seidler on Queen Street Mall, is being transformed into InterContinental Brisbane at a multimillion-dollar cost. The redesign by Woods Bagot includes a revitalized atrium, new restaurants like an Argentinian grill, updated room schemes, a Club InterContinental lounge, and expanded wellness facilities. The hotel remains open during renovations, which are scheduled to be completed by early 2028.
Additionally, in Melbourne, IHG has agreed with developers Salter Brothers to convert the riverside Crowne Plaza into an InterContinental, featuring a rooftop restaurant, club lounge, and bathhouse. The property will further transform into Regent Melbourne by 2030, bringing back the ultra-luxury brand to Australia after a 28-year absence.
IHG's expansion plans also include redevelopment of the Crowne Plaza site in Canberra into another luxury hotel. These investments aim to capitalize on the influx of visitors expected during the Rugby World Cup and enhance the hospitality offerings for high-end travelers in Australia.
