A Jersey politician, Deputy Louise Doublet, has criticized the government's decision to end a trial of free fruit in primary schools due to rising living costs. The pilot program provided apples, bananas, and other fruits to children since 2024 but was discontinued because not enough students were consuming the produce, leading to significant waste. Education Minister Catherine Curtis argued that incorporating fresh fruit into the school meal programme would be more efficient than a separate free fruit scheme. The debate over this issue took place in the States Assembly on September 29. Doublet called for extended funding of such meals, noting their importance in addressing the current high cost of living and providing healthy options for children.
