Three days after agreeing to Donald Trump’s temporary cease-fire on Russian refineries, Ukrainian forces were thrown into a panic when its access to Starshield, a secure US military offshoot of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system, was suddenly shut off. Despite Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries, diesel prices in the United States have not been significantly impacted, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War. From August 2025 until just after the joint Feb. 28 attack on Iran by Trump and Israel, US diesel fuel remained steadily under $4 a gallon. Prices started rising steeply this February when the Iran war began, reaching a high of $6.53 per gallon on Sept. 21. Despite these tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long defended his country's attacks on Russian oil facilities as a means to cut into Moscow’s war chest, even as Trump urged Kyiv to cease targeting them and blamed the US price hikes on Ukraine's actions.
