On October 11, 2026, Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old transgender man from Palatine, Illinois, was arrested for allegedly planning to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora. The plot failed when his rifle jammed outside the temple, forcing him to return home. Paporakis worked as a cashier at Taco Bell and had shared an eight-page document with colleagues outlining his alleged plan, along with images of tactical equipment.
Police executed a search warrant on Paporakis' residence and recovered a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a tactical vest containing body armor. The vest also featured a patch associated with white supremacist ideology. Additionally, surveillance footage showed that a car registered to Paporakis entered the temple's parking lot around 12:55 PM on October 11 before leaving shortly after.
Paporakis appeared in court on October 14 and was charged with one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of weapons. He is being held without bail, and a judge has ordered that he continue receiving hormone injections for gender transition while in jail. The incident prompted strong condemnation from U.S. lawmakers and civil society leaders who emphasized the need to combat anti-Indian and anti-Hindu prejudice.
The Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora issued a statement expressing concern over the attempted attack, noting that they have implemented additional security measures following the incident. Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted how dangerous such acts of violence are for communities targeted by hate and called for serious action to prevent future threats.
