On October 13, a 22-year-old Sacramento man operating a Tesla with its Full Self-Driving feature engaged allegedly crashed into a California Highway Patrol (CHP) cruiser on eastbound Interstate 80 west of Air Base Parkway. The incident occurred while the CHP was investigating another fatal crash at the scene, and the area was clearly marked with flares, cones, and emergency lights. Two officers were seriously injured in the collision, which raised concerns about the reliability and safety of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. According to the CHP, despite the name suggesting full autonomy, Full Self-Driving is actually an SAE Level 2 system requiring constant driver supervision. The crash highlights ongoing debates over legal responsibilities when such advanced driving aids are involved.
