Croatian soccer fans were arrested on Friday after holding an anti-Semitic rally and disrupting a UEFA Conference League match between Hajduk Split and Ajax in Split, Croatia, the day before. The fans chanted slogans like "Crush the Jews" and "Rise up Adolf," referring to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, as they marched through the city ahead of the game. Dozens were detained for violence before the match, while during it, flares and other pyrotechnics forced a 12-minute stoppage. Police arrested at least 12 fans on charges of inciting violence and hatred; more arrests are expected. The incident drew condemnation from Croatian leaders, including President Zoran Milanovic, who called for measures against such behavior that "glorifies Nazism."

Croatia’s ultra-nationalist hardcore supporters have tainted the country’s image for years, notably by chanting pro-fascist slogans and displaying Ustasha symbols. The Ustasha regime killed and persecuted hundreds of thousands of ethnic Serbs, Jews, Roma and antifascist Croatians.
