Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture, has dropped its long-standing opposition to hosting US Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft after Governor Genta Koja, who took office last month, reversed the stance. Previous Okinawan governments had been critical of US military bases and opposed the deployment of Ospreys since before they were first stationed at the base in 2012 due to safety concerns. However, Koja stated that "more than 10 years have passed" since their initial deployment and it is not realistic to call for a reversal given that Japan's Self-Defence Forces also operate these aircraft.
