Four people died on Java island in Indonesia while battling forest fires, which are among the worst seen in over a decade. The victims were killed in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, and two others suffered serious burns. These fires have caused toxic haze that has spread across Southeast Asia, closing schools and increasing respiratory complaints in affected areas. Singapore and Malaysia are particularly impacted by the air pollution, with Singapore ranking as the world's most polluted major city according to IQAir’s live ranking, followed closely by Kuala Lumpur.
The Indonesian Forestry Ministry stated that the deaths highlight the dangers of fighting wildfires and emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures such as tracking fire spread and wind direction. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced plans to take legal action under the country's Transboundary Haze Pollution Act against companies responsible for the fires, though implementing this remains challenging due to jurisdictional issues.
