Story summary

On October 15, 2026, Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, was placed on lockdown following reports of an active shooter. Police responded quickly, setting up a large presence near the school, while directing worried families to Journey Church at 61303 S. Highway 97 for reunification. By October 16, it was confirmed that a 16-year-old suspect had used a long gun to shoot at the school's locked doors before entering and fatally shooting three children (aged 5, 8, and 11) and one teacher. The shooter was then killed by an armed bystander who pursued him into the building. Two additional victims, including another teacher, were hospitalized in critical condition. Law enforcement and local officials have not yet released details about potential links to the school or a motive.
