As of October 15, 2026, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States is engaged in talks with Russia and China to discuss denuclearization. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Russia currently has the largest stockpile of stored nuclear warheads, followed by the United States and then China. During an interview with Newsmax, Trump expressed optimism about China "catching up" with the US within five years in terms of nuclear capabilities. He also mentioned speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding denuclearization efforts. These discussions come after the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) expired earlier this year without renewal; previously, former President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin had extended the treaty for an additional five-year period under the New START agreement signed in 2010.
