School safety expert discusses Oregon shooting

As of October 15, 2026, a 16-year-old gunman killed three children and one adult at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, before being shot dead by a bystander who pursued him into the school. At least five people were initially reported dead, but the death toll was later clarified to be four: three children aged 5, 8, and 11 and one teacher. Two other students were hospitalized with unknown conditions. The shooting occurred around 12:59 PM local time when a call was made reporting shots fired at a car outside the school, and police responded within minutes. Authorities directed families to Journey Church at 61303 S. Highway 97 for reunification. The Bend-La Pine School District had previously banned firearms on its property.
