In Freeport, Maine, soaring heating oil prices from $3.34 per gallon a year ago to $5.97 today have put struggling families in a bind. Cheryl Oliver, who earns roughly $60,000 annually with her husband Chris, now faces the dilemma of choosing between food and fuel. Nationwide, over 4 million households rely on heating oil, mostly concentrated in the Northeast. Tony DiMarco, cofounder of the Freeport Wood Bank, which provides firewood to about 50 families but expects to run out mid-winter due to high demand, warns that people are already spending as much on fuel as last year despite prices doubling.
The Olivers qualified for 100 gallons of free heating oil through a local community center, help worth about $700.
