Google announced on October 15, 2026, that it would display links to websites and articles more prominently and higher up in search results powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This move comes as brands and news publishers warn of a sharp decline in their traffic. Google began integrating AI features into its search results over two years ago. In May 2024, it launched AI Overviews, generating summarized answers to queries rather than just showing links. Then in March 2025, Google introduced AI Mode, which provides more comprehensive answers and additional links. Now, contextual links will be featured more frequently and higher up in AI-generated search content, with a worldwide expansion of the link "carousel" that shows relevant articles directly below AI Overviews. The algorithm will prioritize articles from sites users have previously identified as preferred sources and will also include content from social media posts and forums.
