On October 10, Martin Salgatar, a 20-year-old man from Mississauga, allegedly punched and injured a person during an anti-Israel protest near Yonge and Grosvenor Streets in Toronto. The victim was reportedly knocked to the ground with injuries to his face and leg. Salgatar turned himself into police on October 15 after being identified through video footage that circulated on social media. According to The Toronto Police Service’s hate crime unit, this incident is under investigation as a potential hate crime, given the context of the protest. Video evidence shows other protesters attempting to stop the attack and then verbally abusing the victim afterward. A protester wearing a sweatshirt with an upside-down red triangle—a symbol associated with Hamas—was filmed cursing at the victim, accusing him of "trying to pick fights." The police spokesman noted that their hate crime unit investigates any arrests made during demonstrations, specifically mentioning this as a "pro-Palestine event."
