Iraq's parliament on Thursday completed the formation of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's cabinet by approving 11 portfolios, including Nayef al-Shammari as defence minister and Yasir al-Maliki as interior minister. The government had been operating with several key positions vacant since taking office in May 2026. Lawmakers also approved three deputy prime ministers, among them Laith al-Khazali, a senior leader of the Iran-backed Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement. In 2020, the US designated Asaib Ahl al-Haq as a foreign terrorist organisation and its leaders, brothers Qais al-Khazali and Laith al-Khazali, as specially designated global terrorists due to alleged attacks against US and coalition forces in Iraq. Despite pledging economic reforms, anti-corruption measures, and strengthening state institutions, Zaidi's government faces significant challenges ahead.
