The cold-case murder of 8-year-old Gloria Kowalewicz in Chicago, which remained unsolved for over 65 years, was finally cracked with the help of new DNA technology. Investigators used genetic ancestry websites to connect former Chicago homicide detective Thomas Francis McInerney to the crime scene. Gloria was last seen walking to a nearby church on Nov. 12, 1960, and her body was later found shot twice in the head in a ravine miles from her home. The case shocked the city, prompting a massive manhunt involving local police, firefighters, Boy Scouts, and veterans. McInerney joined the Chicago Police Department (CPD) in 1959 and worked on violent crimes before retiring. CPD stated that it is "devastating" he was never identified or held accountable while alive, emphasizing his actions were a betrayal of trust. The State's Attorney's Office in Cook County is now reviewing cases to identify any potential involvement by McInerney.
