As of October 15, 2026, the roof of a private school in Peshawar, Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, collapsed, killing at least 33 children and one teacher, while more than forty others were injured. The incident occurred around 8:48 AM local time (03:48 GMT) in the Dir Colony area of Peshawar. All victims were under age 16; some remained trapped under rubble as rescuers searched for survivors. Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency to treat the wounded, with several children hospitalized in critical condition. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief and offered condolences to families while directing authorities to provide the best medical care possible. Governor Faisal Karim Kundi ordered a safety audit of all schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to identify potential risks. The cause of the collapse has not been officially determined, though local officials suggested structural inadequacies were involved.
Building collapses are common in Pakistan, where construction standards are often poorly enforced.
Many structures are built with substandard materials, and safety regulations are frequently ignored to reduce costs.
