As of October 15, 2026, the Pentagon is deploying approximately 600 Army troops from the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York, to Latin America for training and joint exercises against drug-trafficking networks. The first group will deploy to a new jungle training facility in Panama, under the jurisdiction of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), before potentially moving on to train with forces in Colombia and Honduras. This move follows Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's August visit to Panama, where he mentioned that Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras had agreed to allow joint military operations against criminal groups within their borders; however, Guatemala later denied reaching such an agreement. The troops may also assist U.S. special operations teams advising local militaries on anti-drug raids. Additionally, several hundred soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division will help staff a new Western Hemisphere military command based in Miami.

The troops could also support U.S. special operations personnel who are advising local militaries conducting raids against suspected drug traffickers, the outlet reported.
