Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced that an uncrewed surface vessel, specifically a 145-ton Leidos Inc Seahawk, has deployed with the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier group for the first time in US Navy history. The carrier strike group left its San Diego home port in late September and is headed to the Middle East. This deployment marks a significant milestone as it demonstrates the Pentagon's growing reliance on unmanned systems for force multiplication and increased operational capability. Cao highlighted that these autonomous vessels can operate over extended distances for months, enhancing the effectiveness of military operations. Additionally, he mentioned the use of other unmanned technologies such as the Corsair II autonomous vessel to rescue Apache helicopter pilots and unmanned underwater vehicles for mine removal in the Strait of Hormuz.
