Manhattan’s only whiskey distillery, Great Jones Distilling Co, unexpectedly closed this month amid record-low US alcohol consumption. The distillery, owned by Proximo Spirits (makers of Jose Cuervo), had invested $21 million to establish the facility in 2021 after overcoming significant bureaucratic hurdles. Located at 686 Broadway and spanning 28,000 square feet, Great Jones featured a restaurant, retail store, speakeasy, tasting rooms, and tours.
Proximo attributed the closure to a review of current beverage industry trends, market conditions, and overall business strategy. Despite the shutdown, Proximo confirmed that Great Jones will continue selling its whiskey online and at retail stores. The distillery's closure comes as part of broader challenges facing the alcohol industry; recent Gallup polls indicate that Americans are drinking less than they have since 1939.
