As of October 14, 2026, a widespread telecommunications outage has affected Bell services in Newfoundland and Labrador, impacting the ability of some residents to make calls, including emergency calls like 911. The cause of the outage remains unknown. In response, Bell Aliant advised customers on social media that voice calls, including those to emergency services, may not be possible.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary reported that its non-emergency phone lines were unavailable but confirmed that the 911 system was functioning normally. Additionally, Newfoundland Power announced that customer service and emergency phone lines were also down due to the outage. The utility provided a specific number for electricity emergencies: 709-685-5078.
The City of St. John's further noted that its 311 service was unavailable for Bell customers. Bell Aliant instructed anyone requiring immediate assistance to seek help directly at the nearest fire station, police station, or hospital emergency department.
