Pope Leo XIV, aged 71, underwent surgery on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove a small nodule from his lung, which was diagnosed as lung adenocarcinoma (a form of lung cancer) during the operation. The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo is recovering well and has resumed normal eating habits; he began walking in his hospital room after respiratory physiotherapy. Blood tests and an X-ray on Wednesday showed normal post-operative results according to Drs. Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora.
Pope Leo announced the surgery during a Sunday blessing, stating it was found early and recommended by doctors. He remains physically active with weekly tennis games and swimming at Castel Gandolfo but has no previously known health issues or smoking history. His upcoming trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in November is uncertain due to recovery needs.
The diagnosis shocked the Catholic community given Pope Leo's relatively young age and energetic leadership since his election in May 2025. World leaders, including Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, have offered support during this challenging period.
