As of October 14, 2026, over 300,000 workers in the Republic of Ireland are on strike, including nurses, doctors, teachers, and civil servants. This action follows a pay dispute between public sector employees and the Irish government. Schools could be closed, hospital appointments canceled, and picket lines established during this 24-hour strike. Earlier in September, more than 100,000 workers had already moved to work-to-rule measures, reducing their workload to protest low wages and working conditions. The Fórsa union, the largest public service union in Ireland with nearly 97% of its members supporting action, has been leading these efforts. Brendan O'Brien from SIPTU, which represents health and administration workers, stated that government failure to establish formal talks left no alternative but collective action for their members.
It comes amid an ongoing pay dispute between public sector workers and the Irish government, with a further strike planned on 21 October.
