Social Security recipients will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, increasing monthly benefits by an average of $75, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). This adjustment affects more than 70 million beneficiaries and nearly 7.5 million recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), with payments beginning in January 2027 for most beneficiaries and on December 31, 2026, for SSI recipients. Despite the increase being described as one of the largest this decade, advocates argue that it still falls short given rising costs such as healthcare and housing expenses. The Senior Citizens League executive director Shannon Benton noted that seniors have struggled with benefits failing to keep pace with their higher living costs.
