Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi engineer working for OpenAI since July 2025, was arrested by the FBI on October 13, 2026, and charged with attempting to secretly record confidential meetings using a hidden audio device. The incident occurred when OpenAI discovered a concealed recording gadget wrapped in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room. This room was frequently used for sensitive discussions involving the company’s proprietary research, technical capabilities, government relationships, and strategic decisions.
OpenAI reported that they had used their internal AI models to identify Alfozan as the individual responsible for planting the device. Security footage showed him near the conference room multiple times despite lacking authorization to enter or participate in meetings there. The FBI is continuing its investigation into whether any data was accessed improperly, though OpenAI has stated it has no indications that this occurred.
Special Agent in Charge Scott Schelble of the FBI San Francisco Field Office emphasized the threat such attempts pose to American innovation and national security interests supported by technological advancements.
