Pope Leo XIV underwent successful cancer surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on October 14, 2026, to remove a tumor from his right lung. The 71-year-old pope was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma during preoperative tests and the lower lobe of his right lung was removed in a 90-minute procedure. The Vatican confirmed there were no complications and Leo is expected to have a "very good prognosis" if the cancer has not spread. Further tests are being conducted to determine the extent of the disease and whether additional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy will be necessary. Pope Leo, the first American-born pope in history, was admitted for what was initially described as the removal of a lung nodule but later confirmed as a cancerous tumor. He is scheduled to have more updates on his condition released by the Vatican soon. His upcoming trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6-17 remains uncertain due to his recovery period.
