The Aporia
Thai authorities are deliberately flooding villages north of Bangkok during monsoon season to protect the capital from severe flooding. This strategy has left homes in Ayutthaya province submerged for months, displacing residents and damaging properties. Villagers like Kamonchanok Sathaphonamonwut, whose home is raised over three meters above ground level but still flooded annually, struggle with basic living conditions as floodwaters inundate their stilt houses. Some have had to move away or raise their homes even higher, but the cumulative effect of these annual floods has overwhelmed the region’s capacity to manage water levels effectively.
