Tropical Storm Isaias formed off eastern Mexico on October 7, 2026, and quickly strengthened into Hurricane Isaias by October 8. The hurricane made landfall near Destin, Florida, at around 8:30 p.m. CDT on October 9 as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It caused significant damage across the Southeastern United States, including extensive flooding and tornadoes.
By October 14, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed that six people had died in Florida due to Hurricane Isaias. Two deaths were previously reported, both related to storm impacts: one from a fallen tree and another from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by improper generator use inside a garage. The remaining four fatalities included a car crash at an intersection where the traffic signals were out of service and disruptions to medical care for two individuals.
Hurricane Isaias left hundreds of thousands without power in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. Verisk, a leading data analytics firm, estimated insured losses from wind damage alone could range between $1 billion and $2 billion, excluding storm surge-related flooding and other secondary impacts.
