Angelina Melnikova, Viktoria Listunova, and Anna Kalmykova were denied entry visas to participate in the 2026 World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The event began on Saturday, October 14, 2026, and serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Melnikova was defending her title from the women’s all-around competition at the previous championships. Russian officials, including Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov, have threatened to petition the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Gymnastics to strip the Rotterdam event of its qualification status for the upcoming Olympics due to these visa denials. Melnikova and Listunova were also gold medalists in the team event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where they narrowly beat a U.S. team that was without star gymnast Simone Biles. Despite this, four other Russian gymnasts were permitted to enter the Netherlands for the competition.
Russian officials reportedly will ask IOC, World Gymnastics to strip event as 2028 Olympic qualifier
Countries hosting sports events still retain the right to deny visas for political or security reasons.
