The Aporia
The Taliban government in Afghanistan has suspended the transmission of BBC broadcasts from FM radio sites across the country. A Taliban spokesman cited "repeated violations" but did not provide details. Since two US news outlets were banned in 2022, the BBC had been the sole international broadcaster inside Afghanistan, reaching over 20% of the adult population weekly with news and educational programs. The BBC stated it would continue reporting independently via shortwave and medium wave radio, online, and satellite despite the ban on FM broadcasts. Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture spokesman Khubaib Ghufran confirmed the suspension in local media reports.
Music is not broadcast and women are less visible on screen than before the Taliban retook power in 2021. Women no longer appear on air together with men.
