Arizona State University is in talks with Dave Hakstol, currently an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, to become its interim hockey coach. This follows the university placing head coach Greg Powers on administrative leave after a player, Matthew Mayich, suffered severe heat stroke during an outdoor workout and remains unlikely to recover. The 21-year-old's condition was caused by reduced oxygen flow to his brain due to external heat stroke.
The Colorado Avalanche have granted Hakstol permission to speak with Arizona State about the position, with a decision expected later that week. Hakstol has experience as an NHL head coach, having led both the Philadelphia Flyers from 2015 to 2018 and the Seattle Kraken from their inaugural season in 2021 until 2024. Additionally, he coached at North Dakota for 15 seasons, leading his team to the Frozen Four seven times before joining the Avalanche as an assistant coach last year.
