The Aporia
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to publish details of his meetings with Manchester City's owners during his time as Mayor of Greater Manchester. This decision comes after criticism over comments he made regarding the club's landmark Premier League case, where City was found guilty of breaching financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. Burnham faced challenges from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch to release "everything" related to his work with Manchester City.
Burnham defended his relationship with the Abu Dhabi-owned club, saying he would be “really concerned” if they chose to sell the club post-ruling but clarified that this did not mean he condoned any wrongdoing. The Premier League's independent commission found City guilty of creating "sham" contracts to funnel more than £830m into their football operations.
The details include a formal meeting at the Global Investment Summit in October 2021, informal meetings during home matches, and accompanying club staff on official overseas visits. These activities were declared according to usual protocols but have now been brought under scrutiny due to recent controversies involving the club's financial practices.
