Saudi Arabia is expanding its oil pipeline network to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route in the Middle East. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced that a gas pipeline will be converted to transport crude oil, with capacity starting at 1 million barrels per day within eight weeks and potentially rising to 3 million barrels with additional investment. The government plans to have up to 10 million barrels of pipeline capacity in two to three years, which could redirect oil to different destinations outside the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative comes amid strained global oil supplies due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, prompting Goldman Sachs to raise its year-end oil price forecast because of thinning inventories. However, experts warn that Iran may not remain passive as new export routes emerge.
