The UK government has launched a new Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce in response to warnings of extreme weather this winter. This follows a summer marked by record-breaking temperatures and drought. The taskforce will convene on Wednesday, with Defra minister Emma Hardy chairing the meeting, bringing together representatives from the Met Office, Environment Agency, mayoral authorities, farming, water, and insurance industries to assess preparedness.
The Environment Agency has highlighted that approximately 6.3 million homes and businesses in England remain at risk of flooding. In anticipation of wet, windy, stormy conditions forecasted by the Met Office, the government is committing a minimum of £10.5 billion through 2036 to safeguard against flood risks and protect critical infrastructure.
