Bobby Gould, a former Washington Capitals forward who played most of his 11-year career with the team, died at age 69. The death was announced on social media by both the Capitals and the NHL on Saturday, though no cause was provided.
Gould spent eight seasons with the Capitals from 1981 to 1989, appearing in 600 games and recording a career-high 50 points during the 1986-87 season. He scored 145 goals and had 159 assists over his career, with 572 penalty minutes.
Before joining the Capitals, Gould played for the Atlanta/Calgary Flames, and he ended his NHL career playing for the Boston Bruins, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 1990, where they lost to the Edmonton Oilers. His defensive skills were recognized when he finished third in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy twice, after both the 1982-83 and 1986-87 seasons.
Beyond his on-ice achievements, Gould was known for building strong relationships and having a positive impact off the ice as well.
