The Aporia
Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate, was discharged from a hospital on October 7th and returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, a women's prison where she had been housed for over 30 years, according to her attorneys. Pike survived an attempted execution by lethal injection on September 30th when two doses of pentobarbital were administered but failed to kill her, marking the first known case of surviving an execution drug overdose. Her legal team stated that she is grateful for medical care received and will continue to receive treatment at the prison. The botched execution has raised significant questions about Tennessee’s lethal injection procedures and led Governor Bill Lee to suspend all remaining executions scheduled for 2023 while a third-party review investigates what went wrong during Pike's attempted execution.
