At least 1,384 people, including 43 on the Chinese side, have been confirmed dead after a massive glacial collapse triggered a devastating flood in Nepal. The disaster occurred on August 26 when a glacier collapsed in Nepal, sending a wall of water, mud, and debris sweeping over the border crossing with China's Tibet region. The flood traveled 22 kilometers in just seven minutes, destroying 27 structures, including the Customs building where a junior Chinese customs officer, Li Leiyang, was working when she was killed just four days into her job. On the Chinese side, 43 people were confirmed dead and 519 remained missing, while on the Nepali side, 1,341 bodies have been retrieved and around 4,996 people remain missing.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams using excavators, shovels, and ground-penetrating radar to scour the area. In one remarkable incident, a 64-year-old woman, Chandika Shrestha, was found alive in her partially buried house in the Nuwakot district, 10 days after the disaster. She was airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.
The floods also caused widespread destruction and chaos, with many people still missing. In one case, a 47-year-old school principal, Rajendra Dawadi, saved the lives of around 900 students by ordering an evacuation just minutes before the floodwaters swept through his school near Nepal's Trishuli River.
Pakistan has dispatched 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nepal to support relief efforts, and rescue teams are also focusing on finding survivors trapped in hydropower tunnels where air pockets may still be present.
