Malaysia closed schools in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Putrajaya, and parts of Pahang on Friday due to severe haze from fires in neighboring Indonesia. The air quality in Kuala Lumpur reached a reading of around 224 on the Air Pollutant Index (API), making it more polluted than any other global major city according to Swiss-based monitor IQAir. Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim advised closing schools when API levels exceeded 150 and called for regional cooperation to address the issue, as did Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim with his Indonesian counterpart. Environmental groups are pressing Malaysia to hold its companies accountable in Indonesia, linking some corporate interests to fire hotspots there. The school closures will last at least through Monday, depending on air quality improvements.
The latest closures follow findings by environmental watchdogs Greenpeace and Pantau Gambut alleging links between Malaysian and Singaporean corporate interests and fire hotspots in Indonesia’s Kalimantan.
The findings have intensified calls for Putrajaya to take action on companies linked to fires abroad, rather than rely on regional cooperation that has yet to prevent recurring haze crises.
