The Aporia
Igor Shesterkin, the star goaltender for the New York Rangers, suffered a serious lower-body injury during a game against the Washington Capitals on Friday night in Washington, D.C., likely involving his right knee. The 30-year-old Russian netminder was attempting to defend the crease when he fell awkwardly and had to be assisted off the ice by teammates without putting any weight on his leg. Shesterkin, who has been playing exceptionally well this season with a 1.75 goals-against average and a historic first goal by a goalie, is now out for the entire 2026-27 season, according to team announcements. This loss comes as a significant blow to the Rangers' prospects in the Eastern Conference, where they had been leading before Shesterkin's injury. Coach Mike Sullivan expressed concern over losing such an "elite" player, while teammate J.T. Miller noted that Shesterkin is "a pillar of this team." Adding to New York’s goalie troubles, Joonas Korpisalo and Spencer Martin are also dealing with injuries.
