President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. The decision was made following a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as announced by Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell on October 5, 2024. This will be the first military execution carried out since 1961.
Hasan, who is of Palestinian descent and raised in the United States, conducted the attack at a medical facility within Fort Hood while shouting "Allahu Akbar." He was convicted by a military jury in 2013 and sentenced to death. During his trial, Hasan represented himself and did not call any witnesses or deny the charges. The court also heard that he had spoken online with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen killed in a U.S. drone strike.
The execution is expected to take place within 60 to 150 days of the approval but has yet to be scheduled by the Secretary of the Army. This marks a significant event as it's the first time since over six decades that the U.S. military will carry out an execution.
