The Aporia
On Friday, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Panama's southern coast near Pitaloza Arriba, shaking buildings and prompting evacuations across the country including its capital, Panama City. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was about 14km southwest of Pitaloza Arriba at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also felt in neighboring countries like Costa Rica and Colombia. The US Tsunami Warning System issued warnings for potential hazardous waves along the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, and even Hawaii within three hours post-earthquake. Despite initial evacuations due to safety concerns, no immediate reports of major damage or casualties were reported from Panama.
