The Aporia
Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, sparked controversy by claiming on X that Jane Doe, who accused seven fraternity brothers from Cornell University of raping her, was actually a willing participant in what she called a "consensual gangbang." The post went viral, garnering more than 1.3 million views. Mace's statement came nearly 18 months after she herself came forward with allegations that she had been drugged and raped by her ex-boyfriend and three of his associates.
Newly released texts showed Doe communicating amiably with the accused men, suggesting they "shouldn’t feel any shame," and using phrases like "our body our choice." However, Doe's lawyer Thomas Giuffra stated that Doe had been in a state of denial and acceptance as she processed her trauma. He claimed Doe’s recollections changed after seeing group chats where the accused fraternity brothers referred to her as “free p—y.” The case, known as the Cornell 7, has become highly divisive with ongoing debates about consent and accountability.
