The Aporia
In July 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Kimberly Guilfoyle, then a nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Greece and a Trump family ally, asked a donor named Eric Deters to pay off her $100,000 American Express bill in exchange for access to top administration officials who could help with his legal and tax issues. Six days after the request, Guilfoyle appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for her confirmation hearing. Despite repeated warnings from Deters about creating a paper trail, Guilfoyle persisted in asking him to make the payment via wire transfer instead of using AMEX. Secretary of State Marco Rubio refused to comment on these allegations while visiting Greece and dismissed them as "not gospel." Additionally, top Democrats have requested an investigation into Guilfoyle's conduct, but it is unclear if this has been initiated.
