European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has signed a partnership deal with Greenland, worth $232 million, to boost economic ties between the EU and the autonomous Danish Arctic territory. The package aims to improve education, fisheries, internet connectivity, hydropower systems, and access to critical raw minerals in Greenland. This move is seen as a counter to US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that the United States should control Greenland for security reasons. Von der Leyen said that Greenland can count on the EU, emphasizing the strength of their partnership. The investment package is part of the EU's increased focus on Greenland, which has been driven by tensions with the US over control of the Arctic region. The deal was signed during a two-day visit to Nuuk, Greenland's capital, where von der Leyen also referred to Greenland as "family" and stated that she wants to make their partnership even stronger.
