Storm Simon, a tropical system, rapidly intensified into a major hurricane, threatening Mexico's Pacific Coast by Saturday, October 8th. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) at midday, was about 245 miles south of Manzanillo and moving westward at 5 mph, expected to turn northward on Friday evening. A hurricane watch was issued from the port city of Manzanillo to vacation hotspot Punta Mita. Forecasters predicted that Simon would strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds reaching up to 210 km/h (130 mph), before making landfall.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Rachel approached Baja California, potentially triggering Tropical Storm Watches this weekend. Swells are expected along the California coast, bringing dangerous surf conditions and coastal flooding through early next week. Additionally, inland areas of the Southwest could face flash floods and high-terrain gusty winds due to Rachel's moisture.
The National Hurricane Center warned that Simon could dump up to 25 inches (64 cm) of rain across parts of southwestern Mexico, leading to life-threatening flooding and mudslides in states like Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco.
