Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Ottawa will launch a new $2 billion heat pump rebate program early next year, aimed at helping one million households switch from more polluting fuels like oil and propane to cleaner alternatives. The government plans to provide up to $10,000 back for low-income households and $2,000 for other homeowners who make the switch. This initiative is part of efforts to reduce heating costs, as heating with oil has become 70% more expensive since 2024, adding at least $2,500 annually per household. Carney made the announcement in Sherbrooke, Que., alongside Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin. The program will help homeowners who need emergency replacements or are nearing replacement of their heating systems, though officials noted that a failed system isn't necessarily required for eligibility.
