The Aporia
On September 30, Christa Pike, sentenced to death for murdering classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1996, survived two lethal injections intended to execute her. A week later, on October 7, Judge I’Ashea Myles ordered the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve all evidence related to the botched execution, including drugs, medical waste, and communications records. Pike, now 50 years old, was hospitalized after waking up confused and in critical condition, with pneumonia and a blood clot, unable to move her injured arms. Her lawyers argued that preserving this evidence is crucial for any future legal challenges and to prevent similar botched executions from happening again.
