The Aporia
The UK has threatened to expel up to 27 Israeli diplomats if Israel follows through with its plan to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem, which is set to occur by this Thursday, September 8. This move would be a significant escalation in British-Israeli diplomatic relations and could mark their lowest point since the formation of Israel. The UK decided to impose sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, prompting Israel's retaliatory threat against the consulate. The consulate, established in 1838, handles UK-Palestinian relations in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. Former British attorney general Dominic Grieve advised that closing the consulate based on its location in East Jerusalem could be considered unlawful by international standards, as Israel views East Jerusalem as part of its sovereign territory but the international community does not recognize this claim.
