Uber, the ride-hailing giant, is laying off 3,300 employees, or approximately 10% of its workforce, in its biggest cut since 2020. This move comes as Uber faces increasing competition from the growing robotaxi industry and other delivery services such as Instacart and DoorDash. The company's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, announced the layoffs in a letter to employees, stating that the goal is to "simplify team structures" and focus on the company's biggest opportunities. This decision was made despite the impact it will have on employees, with Khosrowshahi saying "This wasn't a decision we made lightly." Uber's efforts come as Waymo, an autonomous taxi company owned by Alphabet, is expanding rapidly and has received approval to expand its service area across 18 counties in California.
